Moonrise

Fear of moonlight is the strange curse
of certain islands.
People sit under trees at midnight,
as if seeking shade from solar heat.
Women carry umbrellas. Men wear hats.
Moonviewing is an attraction only for visitors
from across the sea.
Children are never allowed to sleep beside open windows
where their faces might be brushed by the touch
of a bat's wing
or the pale image of reflected light
in a fleeting, radiant dream.
