One of the languages for creative spirits has always been poetry. People who can touch us emotionally with their words are better known as poets. This is a talent, and one that should continue to be taught and encouraged. Two of the better known poetry foundations are the National Poetry Foundation, and The Poetry Foundation. These organizations have monumentally fostered creative talent over the years . The same societies have also been, almost musically instrumental in promoting the art and sounds of poetry.

The National Poetry Foundation has been known for their decade conferences on poetry from different eras. This group has worked closely with the University of Maine’s English Department. The NPF has an immense assortment of poetry writings. The National Poetry Foundation and The Academy of American Poets worked closely together. A key player, Mrs. Marie Bullock, believed that everyone had a right to express their opinions artistically. She believed that poetry held no place for prejudice of style, or thought. These societies began speaking out in public forums based in the New York City area. The NPF is known for scholarly journals and continued the tradition of novel and original ideology with poetic verse into the modern world. The NPF also began a program that offered free poetry lesson plans for high school teachers.

The Poetry Foundation is a fully independent writing organization. Involved in a multitude of various works, the Poetry Foundation was started in Chicago, Illinois. Around the turn of the century, Poetry magazine began, founded by Harriet Monroe. This is one of the longstanding monthly magazines dedicated to poetry written in English. They encourage independent styles and prose. They are dedicated to making poetry available to everyone. The Poetry Foundation has several programs which focus on getting children involved with poetry early in life. They have a phenomenal amount of online and educational materials available. This foundation publishes modern, current day articles related to poetry. There is definitely something for everyone. Their goal is to extend the reach of poetry to every individual and people group. The Poetry Foundation will soon have an open house for an actual building dedicated to poetry.

Poetry is a true art form. With words and verse, one can influence the world. Poetry is universally, eloquently, ageless and uniquely individual. Due to these foundations, poetry’s reach has extended across borders, cultures, and times. Poetry is…individual, fluid words in motion.

Poetry on the Internet is a hard field to break into. It is not impossible but it is not easy either. There are many sites that will accept your poetry. The problem is finding the best places to submit your poetry so you can make money. Here is a basic guideline for that.

Watch out for scams. Poetry is one genre of writing that gets scammed a lot. You have to be very careful. The first thing to be leery of is paying. Never pay to get your poetry published. Always ask about submission copyrights. Be careful to never publish to a site that requires exclusive rights. Now that you know that, here are some ideas of places that you can get your poetry published.

Social bookmarking sites are a great place to begin publishing your poetry. Many of them pay you for each person that clicks on your poem. That can add up over time. Just remember to publish your poetry as non-exclusive. That way you can place those poems in a book someday when you are ready.

Create a blog that showcases your poems. This can really help you to get noticed. Publishers will check your site if you have this sort of thing. If you choose to not publish your poetry on a social bookmarking site, then make sure to have them on your own site. A blog is a great way to do that. It costs nothing and offers you a chance to be seen. Place this link on your business card. Share that card with those who work in the publishing industry.

One person was able to find success in publishing their poetry by sending one of these business cards in an envelope with an audio recording of their poetry on tape to a publisher. They loved her work and published her poetry. That sort of thing can work very well for some. Just make sure that anything that you send to a publisher is typed and not handwritten. Keep your submissions professional so the publishers take you serious. These publishers can be found in writing magazines and on sites that focus on publication of poetry.

The best places to submit your poetry are those that match your work. Start today to promote your poetry. You can get published if you start now. Make sure and be careful of scams and you should be fine.

Edgar Allen Poe, Maya Angelou, Shel Silverstein, and Robert Frost. Although they are of different eras, with different styles, and different expressive tones, all of them have one very important thing in common; they are all famous poets. WHen we are children we veiw poetry as simply rhyme. As we grow older, however, we begin to see the reality of poetry. We begin to realize the difference between rhyme and reason, and we start to notice the purpose and presentation of poetry.

In his forty short years (1809 – 1849), Edgar Allen Poe contributed numerous poems, quotes, and the like. His lifestyle might have been part of what created our impression of “the mysterious poet.” The life of Edgar Allen Poe was often ridiculed due to his stormy background and uncontrollable temper. Poe’s writings include A Dream Within A Dream, Elizabeth, The Lake, and perhaps most famously, The Raven.

Maya Angelou, (1928- ?) a “jack of all trades” has held positions as a poet, an author, a dancer, and a civil rights activist, just to name a few. Born in St Louis, Missouri, Maya Angelou was the first black female director in Hollywood. In 1993, she wrote and delivered “On the Pulse of the Morning” at Bill Clinton’s request, at his inauguration.

Shel Silverstein, (1930 – 1999) is one of the worlds most loved children’s authors. Not just an author and poet, however, Silverstein was an illustrator, a songwriter, and a screenwriter as well. Famous for such writings as “Falling Up”, “A Light i the Attic”, and “The Giving Tree”, Silverstein’s “Where the Sidewalk Ends” is probably one of his most famous poems.

Taking a less serious approach, Robert Frost (1874 – 1963) delivered poetry that gazed deeply into the sole of his surroundings. With such remarks as “I’m never serious except when I’m fooling” brought light to his readers’ hearts. Frost’s light and lyrical humor won the hearts of many until his death in 1963.

The poetry we have come to appreciate today originates from all walks of life, including the varied perspectives from different cultures. As our comprehension of the verse continues to develop, so might our admiration for the poets who have opened the gates.

If you are a writer who mainly focuses on writing poetry and you’d like to see it published, you should try entering a poetry contest. Poetry contests are very popular, and it’s a forum where many new poets are finding recognition. There are many places that offer you the opportunity to submit your poem for judging in a contest, and there are many prizes to be won, including publication so everyone can read your masterpiece. Poetry contests are full of competition, though, so you must make sure that before you submit a poem, make it a good submission.

Before you enter any poetry competition, know the sytle of your poem. There are many different poetry competitions aimed at different genres of poetry writing, and you want to make sure you submit your poem to the right one.

A helpful hint if your still writing your soon to be judged masterpiece, make sure not to overuse illiteration, and completely stay away from overused cliches. The great thing about writing a poem is that no two are alike because the writer is giving her individual touch to a poem. A cliche is not a personal touch, it it something that readers are sick of seeing and it shows a lack in creativity on the part of the poet. Use your own imagination to play with words until you get the perfect combination of word flow.

Once you’ve entered a poetry contest, remember to be patient. Sometimes these competitions can take time, so you must learn to have patience. Also, if you are offered constructive criticism, never get mad. Use this information to improve your art, and be thankful that you have been given opinions that can help your further your writing craft. Also, steer clear of any poetry contests that require you to pay money upfront for your poem to be read or published. Many con artists use techniques to scam poets out of money, but you can avoid this by refusing any poetry contest that expects you to pay money.

No matter what poetry contest you are entering, the most important thing is to write your poem from the heart. Don’t generically manufacture your thoughts into words you think will be most pleasing to others. Be true to yourself and create poetry that comes from inside, and right there you will have an edge on the competition because no other person on earth can express themselves in the exact same way that you do.
